San Vitale 3D digital printing!
Since my PhD thesis has ended and my final dissertation is imminent, I decided to prove how my digital integrated models can be well-rounded to represent architectural spaces, even in real world and not only in virtual one. San Vitale (completely re-modeled using digital photogrammetry to make it more precise and one of the case studies I analized) has been a very interesting research theme and my studies about lighting simulation were rendered according to numerical analisys performed in Radiance™ and EcoTect™. Now the same model abstraction can be successfully used to obtain 3D Zprintings, since it has been generated to be watertight, so STL-compliant .
The research has been based on digital models intended as graphical and alphanumerical architectural-dedicated informative system layered into a "Chinese box" paradigm (Garagnani, 2010).
The integrated model's structure is bound to the building's logical deconstruction and embedded information can be looked up with several software interfaces by different actors involved in construction process. Each analytical aspect implies a nested model refinement, producing evolutive steps from synthesis (processing of geometry) to reduction (preparation for analysis) and finally projection (visualization on various devices and environments).
In order to quantify the effectiveness of a digital model in observance to the purposes for which it has been generated, each value previously isolated has been characterized since every contribution entails an improvement in complexity: a digital representation is thereby affected by the Complication Ratio (Rc, from Italian expression rapporto di complessità), a numerical value derived from Haussdorff's autosimilarity and fractal mathematic, portrayed by a recursive modification of digital morphologies and contents.
Increasing their Complication Ratio, models are qualified as progressive knowledge-based catalogues generated by different software, from scripted CAAD to parametric BIM, easily interchangeable among actors.
San Vitale's digital model reached 0,10 in its Rc value both in analitycal and conceptual stage of development. Now its virtual Chinese box (i.e. the informative archive) embeds some .stl data in order to print morphologies with low level of detail, and this is a noticeable abstraction and an outstanding result for my research.
