The weird 3D tourist

As part of my job and research work, I'm always into the digital representation of the built environment, even when off-duty. It's mostly a state-of-mind attitude, I suppose. That's probably why I cannot behave like ordinary visitors especially when I am a tourist on holidays for the first time in Paris!

La cultura del Building Information Modeling: nasce BIM Foundation

TC Project è da anni un sito di divulgazione scientifica orientato alla ricerca nel campo dell'ingegneria e dell'architettura: in tal senso, gli strumenti digitali sono sempre stati utilizzati ed esaminati con attenzione critica rivolta alla pratica più ampia del progetto architettonico. Il BIM, che da diversi anni si sta affermando nei più importanti scenari operativi internazionali, è stato più volte citato anche nelle pagine di questo blog come un processo in grado di fare davvero la differenza nel raggiungimento della qualità della produzione edilizia.

Per questo TC Project ha avviato nelle scorse settimane l'iniziativa BIM Foundation, intesa come ufficializzazione di un gruppo di ricerca autonomo e para-accademico dedicato alla ricerca, alla consulenza e alla formazione avanzata nei settori della progettazione architettonica, edilizia ed urbana.

BIM Foundation, il cui portale è in fase di allestimento, raccoglierà documenti, paper scientifici ed esperienze legate alla variegata galassia BIM, all'interno della quale si collocano oggi molti (forse troppi) sedicenti specialisti e studiosi, che il più delle volte non hanno forse neppure la sensibilità per comprendere l'intima essenza del Building Information Modeling.

Texture Baking e Ambient Occlusion con 3DStudio Max Design

Introduzione

La moderna rappresentazione d'architettura si affida in misura sempre maggiore alla visualizzazione digitale: alcune tecniche “tradizionali” infatti, come il disegno al tratto o il disegno tecnico (drafting), non sempre sono sufficienti per la corretta trasmissione delle informazioni spaziali che descrivono luoghi, scene e geometrie.

Ecco quindi che alcuni algoritmi pertinenti la computer graphics possono essere combinati per raggiungere questa finalità espressiva, utilizzando i modellatori digitali per la generazione di immagini in grado di “raccontare” i pieni e i vuoti al pari del disegno classico, attraverso modelli tridimensionali.
In questo post verranno esposte alcune tecniche per il baking delle tessiture di occlusione ambientale su modelli tridimensionali complessi, specificatamente preparati per poter essere esportati da 3D Studio Max Design verso altri programmi di modellazione/visualizzazione, senza perdere l’informazione dei materiali.

Plo.T. - AutoCAD Plotting Tool

The association City Space Architecture, in collaboration with the TC Project research lab, is happy to offer to all visitors of its website the free CAD utility Plo.T., developed by S. Garagnani for his lazy CAD students and friends!

Are you tired of losing your mind filling the AutoCAD plot window with numbers difficult to calculate, especially the night before an exam or a delivery? Plo.T. (Plotting Tool) is for you and it's free to use! Plo.T. is a tiny software for MS Windows that does the math for you! Just choose how your drawing was made, choose your plot scale and Plo.T. will suggest you right parameters to print from AutoCAD Model Space or setting proper Layout window's values.

Plo.T. r0.1 can be downloaded from the City Space Architecture repository.

GreenSpider goes academic

The importance of BIM in existing architectures, as I often discussed, is becoming more and more admitted. So, I'm very happy to ascertain this peculiar aspect is beginning to be explored in the academic field as well as in practices. 

 GreenSpider is only a modest tool aimed to ease these researches, and it proves to be useful in some cases: Dr. Angeliki Bregianni, for example, used GreenSpider successfully modeling some vaults in her Diplomas Thesis entitled "BIM Development for Cultural Heritage Management", supervised by Prof. A. Georgopoulos (National Technical University of Athens) and Prof. R. Brumana (Politecnico di Milano), at the Faculty of Rural and Surveying Engineering.

Excellent work Angeliki! The whole theme, pertaining an historical church survey and its BIM semantic modeling, was dealt with clearly obtaining wonderful results, not only in parts modeled with GreenSpider.

Different purpose but great results as well in Luca Nazzari's Degreee Thesis in Architectural Engineering, entitled "Ingegnerizzazione del processo architettonico: progetto di un impianto sportivo nell’area Prati di Caprara a Bologna", supervised by Prof. R. Mingucci, Prof. A. Erioli, and me. Luca defended his thesis a couple of days ago in Bologna, proving how complex morphologies generated by Rhino+Grasshopper can be imported in Revit environment using GreenSpider. Nice!
